SPELL TIMING GUIDE

MOON PHASES & SEASONS

Using symbolism is how many occult and wiccan witches start with spell timing that corresponds with the following times:

🌑New Moon - New Beginnings

🌒Waxing Crescent - Take Action

🌓First Quarter - Process

🌔Waxing Gibbous - Expansion and Abundance

🌕Full Moon - Cleanse, Charge, and Heal. Celebrate!

🌖Waning Gibbous - Shadow work

🌗Last Quarter - Divination, and Discovery

🌘Waning Crescent - Chord cuttings and Baneful

🌷Spring - Independence, Growth, Love

☀️Summer - Abundance, Security, Joy

🍁Fall - Balance, Service, Transformation

❄️Winter - Disciplined, Social, Creative

Using natural celestial cycles is how many folk witches do spell timing. They go outside and look at nature around them and mirror the cycle that they want the energy to travel through. The most obvious ones include Moon and Solar (seasonal) cycles using this philosophy here are some examples:

Spells done with 🌑New Moons energy grows, then releases on the 🌕Full Moon.

Spells done with 🌷Spring energy grows, then releases in ☀️Summer
Spells done in 🍁Fall is done to change something, then releases in ❄️Winter, and fully changes in 🌷Spring.

Spells done in ☀️Summer can be done to slow something down and can release in ❄️Winter, (a good time to get someone you don't like to chill the hell out) but the same can be done at the beginning of winter to manifest it by the end of winter.

Advanced practitioners tend to use the natural celestial cycles but also create more advanced and nuanced spells by leaning on combinations of planetary energy within those cycles to predict spell timing. The easiest version of this is using Western Astrological Moon cycles.

For example: If you do spell work on a 🌑New Moon in ♏ Scorpio, it will Manifest in the 🌕Full Moon in ♏ Scorpio. By being more specific about transformative energy (because that's what Scorpio is good at) on what you want during that New Moon, the more reliable your spell will hit.

USING ASTROLOGY

High Level Astrological Energetic Guide

In witchcraft you mainly need to understand the overarching energy of each planet. Each planet rules a house and zodiac sign. (With the exception of Mercury and Venus, who rule two.) When putting ingredients together for a spell you will need a plant ingredient whose energy aligns with the ruling planet to attune your spell to its energy.  To predict how and when it will manifest you need to look at the Modality, Element, and the current Moon Phase and determine when the cycle restarts again at the next transit. The energy of all the planets influences everything so it is common for the same plant to be used for various planetary energy. For example: An apple tree's leaves can be used for Jupiter, it's fruit for Venus. Below I'll include my favorite that I use for each... Other Astrological Considerations for Spell Work

ZODIAC ELEMENTS

A good way to find tune any spell for intensity. If the sun is in any of these signs you can include their planetary ruler's spell ingredient or the signs glyph to establish how intense the result is. For example. A love spell in an earth sign is a lot more mellow than a love spell done in a fire sign.

FIRE

Intense energy

Confident and Courageous

♈ Aries

♌ Leo

♐ Sagittarius

EARTH

Calm energy

Grounded and stable

♉ Taurus

♍ Virgo

♑ Capricorn

AIR

Interactive energy

Intellectual, and Social

♊ Gemini

♎ Libra

♒ Aquarius

WATER

Intuitive energy

Emotional and Nurturing

♋ Cancer

♏ Scorpio

♓ Pisces

MODALITIES

A good way to fine tune a seasonal spells using spell ingredients that correspond with the zodiac sign the sun is in. For example lets say you do a spell in the beginning of fall, and end at the end of summer. You would include both Venus and Mercury planetary ingredients or Libra and Virgo glyphs with a Sun ingredient.

CARDINAL

Initiate energy

♈ Aries - Beginning of Spring

♋ Cancer - Beginning of Summer

♎ Libra - Beginning of Fall

♑ Capricorn - Beginning of Winter

FIXED

Stabilize energy

Preserves environment

♉ Taurus - Middle of Spring

♌ Leo - Middle of Summer

♏ Scorpio - Middle of Fall

♒ Aquarius - Middle of Winter

ASPECTS

How the planets interact with each other, we use this to determine the best kind of spell and determine how the energy is used. Lets say you want to do a spell right now, you will look at the current sky to see what planets are transiting, depending on how they are aspecting will determine what energetic cycle you want the energy to travel and manifest through.

Conjunct 🥣 - Blended energy, good for drawing energy to you, and binding spells. Planets fuse together, amplifying each other. Powerful, but the energies can be hard to separate or see objectively.

Square 💀- Good time to leverage a planetary energy to overcome something. Chord cuttings and banishment.

Opposition✂️ - Polarizing energy, also good for chord cuttings, or banishment.

Trine 🩹 - Harmonious energy, good for healing work, drawing energy to you, and manifesting.

Sextile 🪄 - Supportive energy, its energy is like a weaker trine. Good to bring something in balance but you have to do the work to get what you want. Honestly I rarely do spells during this time.

Other Energies in Witchcraft

🌚Lunar Eclipse - Is energetically a super New Moon, a perfect time to manifest!

🌞Solar Eclipse - Is energetically a super Full Moon, a perfect time to Heal and Charge.

⚡Cazimi - When the planetary energy is highly elevated in strength because it is amplified by the Sun.

🚫Moon Void of Course - Don't do spell work doing a Moon Void of Course the energy doesn't really go anywhere. I find that a lot of spells don't work at this time the way I plan. (my moon widget at the top of the page and on "The Stars" page will tell you when this.

Planet Positions

Transit - Transits are what's happening in the sky right now. A transit occurs when a planet moves through a zodiac sign in real time, influencing the collective and individual energy at that moment.

Returns - Are the major cycles of each planet in relation to one's natal chart. A return occurs when a transitioning planet reaches the exact degree and sign it occupied at your birth. This means a cycle of that energy for you has ended, and a new cycle of the same energy will begin. This is an important time to do new beginning spells for yourself and set goals around that energy for it to restart when it returns again.

🪞- Retrograde means the planet looks like its going backwards in the sky (its not actually going backwards) This means the energy turns inward. Usually this energy is better for reflecting and releasing while being mindful with how that energy is expressing for you instead of actively manifesting that energy.

Chart Configurations

Stellium

People with Stelliums tend to have more prominent traits of that Zodiac or House that they have a Stellium in. Its useful if you are doing a spell on a person, and do not have a taglock. Adding ingredients around their Stellium's Ruling planet and big three (Sun, Moon, and Ruling Planet)

  • In a Zodiac sign - When you have 3 or more of the same zodiac between the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars.

  • In a House - When you have 3 or more of the same house in your chart associated with any zodiac signs in Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, or Mars.

Note: the reason its in the 5 closest planets, is because in astrology these planets influence us more directly the outer planets energies are further away they rule things more generational

Essential Dignities
An essential dignity is a planet's condition by sign and degree, this means how well it can act on its own characteristics. For the sake of spell work, the only one I have found to be useful is when a planet is Domicile.

Domicile

This is when a planet is in it's own sign. As magic goes, both traditional astrology and modern astrology work. Some folks will say this only works traditionally within 7 planets back before we knew there were 9. Anecdotally, when I look at a planet that rules more than one sign, usually its that planetary energy internalized in one planet and externalized in the other.  Generally, all astrology is, is behavior analysis using the planets as a time tracking tool. In witchcraft Scorpio energy is very similar to Aries energy the difference being Aries is in your face, and Scorpio tends to be behind your back, so it makes sense that Pluto became its new ruling planet as Pluto energy is similar to the shadow version of Aries.

In Traditional Astrology this is:
Sun in Leo, Moon in Cancer, Mercury in Gemini  or Virgo, Venus in Taurus or Libra, Mars in Aries or Scorpio,  Jupiter in Sagittarius  and Pisces,  Saturn in Capricorn and Aquarius.

Modern:

Sun in Leo, Moon in Cancer, Mercury in Gemini or Virgo, Venus in Taurus or Libra, Mars in Aries, Jupiter in Sagittarius, Saturn in Capricorn, Uranus in Aquarius, Neptune in Pisces, Pluto in Scorpio.

What does this mean for your magic? It means you have more accessibility for ingredients during that time, if the planet is domiciled traditionally you can use it's traditional planet for the spell.

Astrology beyond witchcraft

Using astrology in spell work is an incredible tool to predict when your spell will hit, how hard it will hit and tying it to a person with specific astrological attributes.  It can help predict the future or see what current or future circumstances may influence the efficacy of your spell. The chart can help you understand these energies, but it is not proper astrology. In order to do that, you will need to have a better understanding of astrology as a whole beyond grabbing corresponding ingredients for the various planets.  Astrology is synthesis of your entire Natal Chart, if you're new to astrology the following steps will help you read your chart better than the average hobbyist:

  1. Identify the Sun, Moon, and Rising to establish the core identity.

  2. Do you have any Stelliums? These areas of life are the most emphasized.

  3. Identify which houses are occupied versus empty. Occupied houses are active; empty houses simply mean that those life areas run on autopilot meaning they are ruled by the house's natural sign ruler.

  4. Look at the major aspects, especially to the Sun, Moon, and chart ruler (the planet that rules the Rising sign). The ruler is the single most important placement. This planet is the lens through which your whole chart expresses.

  5. Look for patterns, for example, is your chart heavily weighted in Fire signs? Earth houses? Cardinal modality? These patterns tell your overarching story of who you are and where you are going.

  6. The single most helpful tool for witches is The Pattern App. It tells you what current transits are happening in your natal chart. This will help you see if something is or is not in your control to do or undo in spell work. Sometimes things are just timing there's not point in wasting spell ingredients if its something that simply needs to run its course.

If this all seems too much you can use my Spell Timing Calendar to plan spells out for the rest of 2026. After that I will be transitioning to an app.
